Running a mile a day for 40 days so more women can pursue Buddhist ordination

Runners World Run Streak Winter 2023 · 23 November 2023
I've been in the ordination training process for over 12 years, and in that time I've been fortunate to be able to go on retreat most years to our ordination training centre in Aber, Wales - but it's really becoming almost impossible to manage to get a place now there's so many women wanting to deepen their Buddhist practice and train for ordination.
Triratna is quite unique in that the women's ordination process is fully led by and supported by women - and while it's the same ordination as men (as in, the same ritual processes and neither is higher than the other etc), we don't have the same opportunities right now.
This is because there's a huge bottleneck when it comes to getting one of the limited places on the ordination training retreats, a big part of both studying the Buddha's teachings in a more intensive setting but also making friendships with peers who are also walking this path, and meeting women who teach on those retreats and the ordination team - wonderful Dharma teachers from around the world.
Training for ordination might seem like something that just benefits the individual, but in fact in the process of furthering your understanding of the Buddhist teachings and more deeply integrating that understanding into your life, the lives of many people are deeply impacted.
Tiratanaloka has helped hundreds of women deepen their Buddhist practice to the point of ordination through friendship, Dharma study and Buddhist practice. But they've outgrown their building. They need help to raise money for a bigger, better Tiratanaloka so that many more can benefit from the inspiration that the Tiratanaloka team provides.
I've done the runner's world run streak before - a mile a day between thanksgiving and new years day - and it's hard work - committing to getting out there every day come rain, sun or snow!
At the moment I've not been able to run since June 2022 due to a string of unfortunate injuries and more recently an accident that left me with a badly broken wrist needing surgery!
I'm much better now and have been working hard in physio, and I want to slowly work myself back to running in preparation for my ultramarathon in June!
I'm going to start my mile a day challenge on Thanksgiving, and it will finish on New Year's Day.
I've got a few commitments which I'm making because I might not be able to physically run the full mile in one go due to the delights of my wonky body and winter:
- To cover at least 1 mile each day, which can be indoor or outside
- To allow myself to run/walk/run as needed, I just have to cover the distance, however I can
- If I'm unwell and can't run, it's ok to walk for that day
I'll be tracking on my Garmin and posting to Strava, and sharing updates here and on my Instagram account, https://instagram.com/TrainingWithEDS
You're welcome to join me if you'd like to do your own mile a day! 🎉
