My Dad is an active volunteer for this charity and visits the country every year to help with the charity's activities over there.
The school we are primarily looking to support with the fund raise is called Rumba School, a lower basic school which teaches kids between the ages of 4 and 11. The scenario is not great, no electricity, 670 children, six classrooms (children are taught in shifts and also outdoors under the hot sun), leaking roof, only 1 (non-flushing) toilet each for boys and girls and yes for a football mad nation, just one tatty old football to play with which has seen better days!
There are a group of individuals collectively aiming to raise £10,000 and more. Please see the Team page for progress towards our overall target. Here's where the Charity is looking to spend the money raised:
• Replace/repair the roof
• Build a new toilet block
• Fit solar panels
• Tile the classroom floors
• Create an outdoor covered teaching space
• Provide sports equipment
• Paint the school building inside and out
• The charity from donations will help replace tables/chairs and provide exercise/learning books
You can read all about the great work of the Trust https://www.gambianschools.org/ led by Steve & Hilary Lawther, a retired but still hardworking couple who base themselves in The Gambia for six months of the year overseeing all the works undertaken by the charity. They have recently been awarded the MBE for their contribution to education in The Gambia which was well deserved.
Every penny raised will be spent in Gambia, no expenses/salaries are paid by the charity to the Trustees or volunteers. The Charity having built 6 schools out of the ground plus several libraries, extensions and new classroom blocks has a regular team of local tradespeople who are paid direct by the Charity.
