Story
On the 23rd June 2024, alongside a group of other ‘insane’ cyclists Ross will be taking on the MEGA endurance event ‘Dragon Ride’
The Dragon Ride is one of the oldest and most iconic sportives in the UK, renowned as being the toughest and most legendary in the British Isles. Setting out from Port Talbot the Route covers 300km of undulating terrain around the Brecon Beacons.; with over 4600 metres of elevation this ride is not for the faint hearted.
We will be keeping a close eye on Ross’ training over the next month
Ross is putting himself through the quad burning pain in aid of a charity close to heart, The Perthes Foundation - a charity setup to support children who suffer with the debilitating disease.
For those unfamiliar with Perthes disease, it affects 5 in every 100,000 children. The disease causes disruption to the blood supply around the hip, causing bone cells to die, affecting mobility in the joint.
Those affected suffer physical pain, often struggling with activities we take for granted like walking, running, and playing in the park. The emotional trauma it has on the child and their families is terrible.
Currently there is no known cause for the disease, and no cure. It is treated in various ways from hip surgeries, fixators, leg braces, petri casts, wheelchairs, and walkers. The effects can continue into adulthood, limiting physical activities, eventually leading to the need of a total hip replacement.
The Perthes Foundation is a charity close to Ross, Charlie Thomas one of Ross's close friends has suffered with the Perthes. After childhood trauma, he eventually had surgery and still walks with a limp. Charlie spent his childhood struggling with physical activity and against doctor’s advice he decided to pursue a career on his feet…he is a stubborn bastard! Fast forward to today he is an avid amateur cyclist and will be taking on the mammoth dragon ride alongside Ross…and no doubt will beat him around the circuit!
The money raised will go to a summer camp for those affected with Perthes giving much needed support to the children and their families.
