Story
Many of you will know that I don't typically ask people to sponsor me for taking part in things like this because I just like to take part without the pressure of fundraising.
In a similar vein, you will also know that I don't really like running much at all - and while I am more than happy to mountain bike, hike and kayak till the cows come home, running holds very little attraction to me and I find it quite difficult. To manage expectations, I will be very happy if I get around the course in around 2 hours and 25 minutes - not a great time but still a challenge for me!.
So with those statements out there, I have decided to make an exception to my no fundraising approach because Fleet Lions are raising funds for 2 very worthwhile causes. All donations will be split 50/50 between the Fleet Lions Prostate Cancer Screening Programme and the Fleet Food Bank.
Just over 2 years ago, I had an operation to remove my Prostate Gland because I had developed Prostate Cancer. Luckily, the cancer was caught early and I have made a good recovery to date.
Catching the cancer early was very much down to me having participated in the Prostate Cancer Screening Programme for a couple of years before diagnosis, and while the screening didn't identify the cancer, the results over time and the knowledge I had about the disease - which I learned at the presentations - enabled me to have early and sensible discussions with my GP when I started experiencing some of the symptoms.
1 in 8 men in the UK will get Prostate Cancer. Early screening through a simple blood test allows the disease to be caught before more unpleasant symptoms appear and when treatment is most effective. The Lions Prostate Screening Programme is hugely important in this regard and, put quite simply, it saves lives. I am very grateful that I was able to take part in the screening programme.
The Fleet Food Bank supports people in the local area by providing basic supplies to stop people going hungry in these times where everything just costs so much more than it used to.
So, please consider donating something - even if it is only the price of a cup of coffee because every little will help fund these really worthwhile causes
