Story
On 16 September 2023 at Hinton Airfield, Northamptonshire, I will be jumping out of a plane in the name of charity. For Papyrus, to be precise. A fantastic charity that has recently become the Corporate Charity Partner to Wates (the company I work for!)
For many years, I've said 'Oh, I'd love to do that'. I've even had a couple of goes in an iFly indoor sky diving centre, and... well... how different can it really be?
Did I, until recently, have an irrational fear of flying, having never boarded a plane until my late 20's? Perhaps.
Is my desire to do this based purely on a memory of watching the Mighty Morphin Power Ranger movie and seeing them (or their stunt people) doing all sorts of cool tricks and stunts? 100%
Don't you have a wife and child (with one more on the way)? This feels a little dangerous and, dare I say it - reckless, Robin! Pah - Danger is my middle name. Or it would have been if my parents hadn't played it safe with 'Adam'. Boring.
So, here's the deal - I need to raise £395 (and beyond) and I'd love it if you would be kind enough to donate whatever you can afford. I appreciate that times are incredibly tough right now so, if you can't spare the change, I would equally love a message to wish me luck or the promise to look after Emily, Daisy and bump - if things go wrong.
Papyrus does incredible work for the prevention of young suicide and, while I have battles with my own mental health that have been with me since my teenage years, I know that I'm incredibly lucky to be here and have the chance to do this, and not be another statistic.
So, that's it - that's all I have to say, really. In the words of Aladdin "Here goes, better throw my hand in, Wish me happy landin', All I gotta do is jump!"
More About Papyrus
PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide is the UK charity dedicated to the prevention of suicide and the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in young people.
Suicide is the biggest killer of people aged 35 and under in the UK. We believe that suicide is preventable.
PAPYRUS was founded in 1997 by a group of bereaved parents, who had each lost children to suicide. Our founding parents shared core beliefs that suicide is preventable, and that those of us with lived experience of suicide have a valuable and unique contribution to make to the wider conversation around suicide.
Since then, PAPYRUS has grown into a UK-wide charity with offices in north west England, south west England, West Midlands, London, Northern Ireland, north Wales, south Wales, and Scotland.
