Story
After a lifetime of sloth I took up road cycling in 2021. I've worked up my ride distances and managed a metric century (100km) in March 2022. I've entered RideLondon Essex 100 this year to try and complete an imperial century (100 miles). The ride is on Sunday 28th May 2023.
My father, sister-in-law, brother-in-law and cousin all suffer from ME. My father has suffered for more than 10 years and it ended his career. My sister-in-law is effectively housebound has missed countless family events. I have seen first-hand how debilitating and life altering this condition can be.
ME is also widely misunderstood, can only be diagnosed by exclusion and there is no cure either therapeutic or pharmaceutical. As a relatively unknown and low profile condition compared to illnesses such as cancer, heart disease or physical disabilities there is disproportionate lack of funding and research. There appear to be strong links between ME and long-COVID.
I am raising money for the ME Association to support their research activities and support for affected people and their families.
You can track me on the Ford Ride London app and the full map is here if you want to see me on the route. I’ll be wearing my custom ME Association jersey which I designed myself so I’ll be easy to spot!
ME Association:
ME (Myalgic Encephalopathy), or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, blights the lives of 250,000 people in UK today. The smallest exertion can floor them; their joints and muscles ache unbearably; restful sleep eludes them; and ‘brain fog’ clouds their thinking. It changes lives drastically – disrupting study; making work impossible; and straining family relations to breaking point. Many sufferers cannot leave their homes. There is no known cure.
Please help us to help them.
