After recruiting a team of runners from within my department, the School of English, Communication & Philosophy (ENCAP), to undertake the Cardiff Half Marathon in March 2022, and as a team combined raising over £5,000, I have decided to try to replicate this once again and lead an ENCAP team to run the Cardiff Half Marathon in October 2025.

With eleven students and staff from our School participating for the 2025 race, each of us will run and fundraise to support Cardiff University's neuroscience, mental health and cancer research efforts. The funds raised will go to supporting the next generation of researchers, to help accelerate life-changing discoveries to improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for people living with a wide range of conditions.

Cardiff's neuroscience and mental health researchers are developing new treatments for a wide range of debilitating conditions including ADHD, depression, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's.

Cancer researchers at Cardiff University are working to improve outcomes for people living with some of the most common cancers such as breast, prostate and bowel, as well as those that are rarer or hard to treat.

On a personal level, having sadly lost friends to both cancer and suicide in recent times, it felt right that I should make an effort to support and promote both of these worthwhile causes. I have therefore set myself the goal of fundraising and completing six half marathon races within one year of the Cardiff event, which will be the first. My goal is to achieve under two hours in each race, and should I not attain this, another additional race will be added to the effort until I have completed all to time..
