Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I'm running the London Marathon on Sunday 21 April 2024 for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) who fund research to try and cure, treat and prevent Type1 diabetes, with a particular focus on better outcomes for children with diabetes. I have never attempted a marathon before, and probably will never again!
Most of you will know, I have type one diabetes and have done since the age of 2, so some 34 years give or take - as such this is a charity close to my heart as I know how difficult it can be to live with diabetes from childhood and through into adulthood (it doesn’t really get easier).
Type 1 Diabetes for me, and many others is a 24 hour a day, 365 days a year slog and is a difficult condition to control. Research has shown that on average people with type 1 diabetes make 180 additional health-related decisions/thoughts every day, that's equivalent to around one every five waking minutes. Chuck in 4 injections a day and disrupted sleep and you can see why I’m occasionally grumpy.
As such, being diabetic is knackering and can seriously impact your mental and physical wellbeing. You can probably imagine the difficulty of having to do this for a 2 or 3 year old child, let alone for an adult silly enough to take on a marathon…..why have I done this, to raise money, demonstrate a disability does not have to hold you back and that anything is possible.
Whilst unfortunately Type 1 Diabetes cannot currently be prevented or cured, the JDRF are committed to address this. If you would like to support me and JDRF to raise funds to continue their research to develop better treatments, find a cure and prevent Type 1 Diabetes developing in the first place, please make a donation.
Many Thanks
Rob
