Story

WHY CHOOSE A 170 MILE CHARITY BIKE RIDE?

Thursday 19th and Friday 20th September 2024

In a mad probably slightly drunken moment, both myself and Phil Moses decided it would be great to do some sort of challenge for charity and who would believe this mad thought could actually gain traction, whilst at the same time creating so many questions from friends and colleagues alike, most of which included the word WHY?

Why a bike ride, why that route and why that charity etc etc?

For those of you who know myself and Phil, you will be very aware that we are not built for running and we wanted more of a challenge than simply falling out of an aeroplane, so the idea of a cycle ride was born.

We are both in the vehicle rental industry Phil at Beerhouse Self Drive in Hull and me at First Self Drive in Norwich. We met through The United Rental Group who offer vehicle supply and support to over 550 independent rental companies across the UK and its fair to say they that to many of us, they have become more like family.

6 years ago, former United Rental Group Commercial Director Bob Baillie and his wife Anne received the worst possible news that their daughter Emily Driscoll had been diagnosed with bowel cancer and following this awful diagnosis and the subsequent amazing ongoing care and support that she is receiving, Bob felt compelled to assist where he could in raising money for Bowel Cancer UK to assist in funding their research and lifesaving work.

Both myself and Phil recognised his passion and commitment to such a worthy cause and thus the decision was made to support Bob’s efforts.

Which leads us nicely onto Why that route?

Truthfully, Norwich seemed like a good place to start as it’s relatively flat and we are both relatively unfit. The ride needed to offer a challenge in terms of distance and ideally have a tie in to both the rental industry and Bob’s charity, therefore starting at the First Self Drive offices in Norwich and finishing at Bob’s place of work the United Rental Group offices in Chesterfield seemed the ideal solution.

This challenge will be completed over two days and we will be joined by various other United Rental Group staff members including Chief Executive Officer Per Voegerl and 11 other independent vehicle rental company owners.. There will also be the opportunity for others to join us for short stints as we puff and pant our way across the country.

We are looking forward to this challenge with a certain amount of trepidation and ask that you give generously to this worthy cause to help ensure the hard work is all worthwhile.

Thank you for your kind Support.
