I'm Running the Edinburgh Half Marathon on the 26th May this year to raise money for the sick kids,
On the 9th of December 2021, My daughter was taken into A&E at the Sick Kids in Edinburgh with what we thought was a viral infection with the symptoms of a cough, fever, jaundice and reduced oral intake. We were then shortly told that actually... her kidneys were failing, and her right lung wasn’t functioning properly due to her also having complex pneumococcal pneumonia and 5 different respiratory viral infections. Evie was taken straight up to intensive care where she was given several blood and platelet transfusions and, on the 10th of December, we were told that Evie would be put into an induced coma as she was getting worse and required dialysis. Evie had 14 days of intense renal replacement therapy at the Sick Kids in Edinburgh which unfortunately didn’t work so we then had to get transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow on Christmas Eve for further renal treatment where she was diagnosed with Haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), she was taken straight into theatre for them to insert new dialysis equipment into her stomach and the side of her chest, She also had to learn to walk again.
During this time, we stayed at the Ronald McDonald charity house, they went above and beyond to support us and provide us with everything we needed and more. The Sick Kids charity had organised for Santa to come around to see all the kids and provided gifts and on the morning of Christmas day, the charity had left bags of gifts for the parents staying in the charity house. Evie spent a further two weeks in Glasgow and on Christmas day was being brought around from the coma, from the minute Evie opened her eyes the sick kids charity provided Evie and parents with all the support and entertainment that you could ever ask for, from bringing toys, colouring in books, iPad, DVDs and even came to read stories sing songs and bed side performers to Evie’s bed space then as soon as she was able to leave her bed they provided us with a buggy so we could walk around the hospital, they had an onsite cinema which they took us along to. On the day of discharge, they came and saw us and brought lots of gifts for Evie to take home. After discharge, we had a lot of outpatient appointments and even still, they came along to entertain with balloon modellers, painting, and again more performances. Although what happened to Evie was terrifying the Sick Kids’ charity went above and beyond to try and make a horrible situation that bit easier for Evie and we can’t thank them enough.
