It's important for young leaders to know how to approach community service. We need to learn what the community wants. It's not about our interests - it's about the needs and strengths of the community. Take the time to listen and then move forward. It's not about you. It's about the community. The Campus Y provides staff and peer guidance for young leaders to help avoid missteps in working with the community. Volunteering is the best way to get better at volunteering, but it's important to make sure the service performed doesn't wind up creating more harm than good.
If I were designing my own Campus Y program, I'd look into creating a mobile food pantry and meal delivery program to ensure all community members have the food resources to ensure their wellbeing.
Snag your tix to the event and cheer me on!

More about Throwback Prom:
Throwback Prom is an annual event that brings together 200 attendees, including university leadership, current students, and alumni from Washington University, as well as connections across the St. Louis community. Through this event, we aim to foster a sense of community - picture all ages dancing to “Y.M.C.A.” together on the dance floor - while also benefiting the work of the Campus Y.
The Campus Y guides and advises 60 student leaders to coordinate 25 community volunteer programs engaging 800 volunteers in 25,000 hours of service each year. Three staff and the seven member Student Executive Council provide a sounding board for student leaders to ensure community engagement is well-informed and guided by the community engaged.
