Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
In 1917 a French merchant vessel, SS Longwy, with Naval crew on board was torpedoed off the South West coast of Scotland. All 31 crew were lost.
Only 3 of the bodies were washed ashore and buried here in Girvan`s Doune Cemetery. The body of one was repatriated to France in 1924 and has left a gap between the 2 simple crosses that remain. We want to fill that gap as there is no Memorial to these men either in Scotland or France.
For many years now our aim has been to erect a permanent memorial in honour of all 31 lost that night.
We are aiming to raise funds for the "Scottish" donation towards this Memorial, Girvan and District Great War Project are working in conjunction with Legion Scotland Maybole Branch and Souvenir Français and we are hoping to raise enough funds for this project.
There are tens of thousands of "Scottish Fallen" from the Great War in France but only 19 French from WW1are buried on British soil.
