Story
The simple pleasure of riding a bike is something that most of us take for granted. Yet, for many differently-abled people this is simply not a possibility.
Wheels for All Gloucestershire is a nationally recognised programme that embraces all children and adults with disabilities and differing needs. The volunteer staffed centre at Gloucester Athletic track welcomes differently-abled people, both mentally and physically, and helps them to enjoy the simple pleasure of riding a bike.
Individuals, groups from care homes, and families can come along and enjoy a lovely hour or so together on a bike, regardless of their ability or cycling needs – everyone is welcome.
There are many weird and wonderful cycles at Wheels for All. Each bike is specially constructed to cater for the need of each rider. More bikes are needed, as track days are oversubscribed.
It's hard to walk away from this place unmoved by the experience. Such is the immense pleasure and appreciation these riders radiate. The smiles on their faces say it all.
On my first visit to the Gloucester track, I met Dave. When he saw me in my cycling gear, he proudly announced with a huge grin on his face, that “we are both cyclists”. I asked him what his favourite thing was about cycling, and he said “It’s the freedom, and the feeling of the wind on my face”.
One mother and daughter I met traveled all the way from Birmingham on the train. They enjoy their time cycling with at Wheels for All so much, that they walk with a wheelchair from Gloucester Train station to the centre, that's a 5 mile walk there and back.
These riders are Inspirational!
So, to raise money for this wonderful cause I am going to attempt to cycle 3,000 miles to Istanbul from my home in Gloucestershire. I will not have a support vehicle, and will be carrying all I need with me on my bike. I leave on 1st September 23, and if successful I hope to ride into Istanbul on 24th October.
I really hope you can support me. Please, please make a donation. More side by side bikes, and perhaps an electric bike at Wheels for All Gloucestershire will make such a difference.
By the way……I agree with Dave…...”we are both cyclists”.
Let’s keep pedaling.....
