Story
When I first saw this challenge I immediately wanted to do it, despite being completely terrified of heights. Not quite sure how I managed to talk Richard into it, but we are now taking part and trekking the infamous Kilimanjaro in June 2024.
Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world: 5,895 m above sea level and about 4,900 m above its plateau base
The hike takes place over a gruelling seven days and will be both mentally and physically challenging. Daily trekking is around 6-7 hours, covering a variety of terrain and beautiful scenery. Altitude sickness can and does play a big part, there is no way to train for this, so we will be checked daily to make sure that we are fit enough to continue. The summit night will be the biggest challenge, leaving camp at midnight in the hope of summiting to watch the sunrise, finishing then with a 6-8 hour trek back to our final camp for the night.
We are doing this to help raise funds for our local Hospice. Overgate hospice provides specialist care & loving support to people with a life limiting illness & their families. They need your support to ensure that their expert team are always here to care for people who are facing the end of their lives, helping them maintain their independence & dignity until the very end.
Please help us support this amazing hospice. Any donation no matter how small, will make all the difference and will be greatly appreciated by ourselves and our fantastic trekking group.
