Story
I am probably the most un-disciplined person you will ever meet. Any kind of routine proves difficult and daily practices and disciplines never last very long.
I’m also quickly approaching a bit of an age milestone and have set myself a goal to be ‘Fit at 50’.
So, I have decided to take on a challenge over the next 5 months to create discipline, increase my fitness and also to raise money for Bristol Chaplaincy.
Starting on the 26th August and going through to my 50th birthday on the 6th February (165 days), I’m going to complete 100 Kettlebell Swings every single day. That’s a total of 16,500 Kettlebell Swings.
I could have planned a one-off event, or set a bigger target, however, the challenge is about creating discipline and building sustainable habits to increase my fitness over a long period of time, rather than completing a one hit wonder.
In case you’re not familiar, kettlebell swings are high-intensity, low-impact exercises that work the muscles of your upper and lower body, and also your midsection. They can help you improve your cardiovascular fitness, strength, and power. They are an ideal full body workout.
I started with a 20KG kettlebell, and after 2 weeks have now moved up to a 24KG and will then later up to a 28KG and 32KG bell.
Why raise money for Bristol Chaplaincy?
Bristol Chaplaincy is a charity that I run with my wife Lois that provides support to anyone in Bristol who is facing any kind of challenge in their life.
Studies have identified that 38% of people living in Bristol are currently unsatisfied with their lives and mental health statistics are above the national average. The city is reaching all-time highs in cases of anxiety, stress, depression, and loneliness, and record lows in terms of wellbeing and mental health.
Despite this there is a severe lack of support for those who are struggling.
Bristol Chaplaincy takes the time to listen to individuals and hear their unique situations. We aim to listen, to help them find hope, and even provide a solution to the challenge, issue or change that they might be facing.
We would very much appreciate your sponsorship and support as I take on this challenge over the next 5 months.
All funds raised will go directly to increasing the support we offer and to directly helping more people.
Thank you very much for your support
Richard
