Story

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫ਼ਤਹਿ

In loving memory of my Mama-Ji (Uncle), Avjit Singh Sahota, I am taking part in the Ultra White Collar Boxing Event on 13.07.24, to raise money for the University Hospitals Birmingham Charity, whereby my Mama-Ji was treated within the Liver Department.

In 2017, my Mama-Ji developed an autoimmune disease which began attacking his liver, leading to liver failure and subsequently led to him having a liver transplant. After a successful liver transplant, there were some serious complications that meant he was placed in intensive care for an extended period of time fighting for his life. Avjit was able to fight his way through and worked extremely hard with the aid of his mum and dad to get back on his feet, and was showing solid signs of recovery, providing hope for us all that the fight was successfully fought by remaining positive throughout this.

Sadly, however, in 2019 my Mama-Ji developed a rare cancer which took the doctors a long time to identify. The doctors were unable to treat the cancer due to his weakened immune system and liver, and they were unable to treat his liver due to the cancer, and ultimately my Mama-Ji passed away at age 29 from organ failure.

I have decided to take part in this exciting cause to honour my Mama-Ji as I continue to remember the principles and values that my Mama-Ji lived by. These include always thinking of others and remaining in Chardi Kala (high spirit & positivity) despite the troubles life may throw, to be compassionate, loving, and always available to offer sound and solid advice and support. My Mama-ji always took an interest in me, if that was my school, extra-curricular activities, or even football! And this love that he had was shared to all that were lucky enough to have him in their lifes.

I will be taking part in this incredible boxing journey for my Mama-Ji, and those we all know who have been fighting through similar situations.

Any donations would be much appreciated, as every penny will help to support liver patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham by funding research, equipment and facilities over and above what the NHS can provide.
