In September 2018 our gorgeous 5 year old niece, Amelie, was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.
That day changed my sister’s family’s life, and all our lives, forever.
Nothing could have prepared the family for the shock of this news and the gruelling treatment plan that followed.
By the time she was diagnosed the cancer had spread to both of her lungs. The tumour had caused so much damage that her leg could not be saved and had to be amputated above the knee a few days after her 6th birthday.
After enduring 15 rounds of intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy at UCLH, Amelie has defied all the odds. She has not stopped inspiring and astounding us with her amazing recovery, tenacity, determination and spirit.
She is now a happy, active and confident 11 year old. She thrives on her prosthetic leg and loves sport. She is a sport scholar at Duke of Kent School, and plays netball, football and hockey with her able bodied peers. Outside of school she swims, ski's, horse rides and also rows with an ex Paralympian every week.
Her life ambition is to become a Paralympian and swim the channel. She also enjoys family time with her Mum (my sister Emma) and Dad (Steve), little sister Georgie and baby brother Ted. However, every day she still faces the challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis and living with a disability.
I have chosen to run the marathon to raise money for Sarcoma UK and show support to my niece, my sister and their wonderful family. The way they have supported Amelie and helped her get to where she is now with such love and dedication has been totally inspiring
For Amelie to get to where she is now is amazing, but rare for children or adults diagnosed with this brutal form of cancer. Treatment plans are incredibly harsh and have not really developed over the last 30 years.
Sarcoma is a type of cancer that develops in the bone and soft tissue. It is very difficult to diagnose and one of the hardest to treat. Funding is desperately needed to help raise awareness to help get earlier diagnosis, research new treatment methods and improve outcomes.
Please support me to help raise awareness of this lesser known cancer, and to help other children like Amelie.
