Supporting people in need by developing and deploying manual washing machines.

Story

JLR's REACH Network will be helping women burdened by the back breaking, tiring process of handwashing clothes in South Africa this summer.

The Clean Clothes Campaign will be delivering 10 Divya manual washing machines to women and their families, who have limited access to electricity and running water in a township in Johannesburg.

Diepsloot is near the JLR's South Africa Experience Centre and we have named this delivery Thembaletu, which means ‘Our Hope’ in South Africa.

ABOUT THE TOWNSHIP

Diepsloot is a densely populated township in the north of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is made up of fully government-subsidised housing, brick houses built by landowners, partially government subsidised houses as well as shacks.

Diepsloot is home to over 350,000 people; many of them live in shacks 3 meters by 2 meters assembled from scrap metal, wood, plastic and cardboard. Some families lack access to basic services such as electricity, running water, sewage and rubbish removal.

THE CLEAN CLOTHES CAMPAIGN

70% of the world do not have access to an electric washing machine. Instead, women and children take on the burden of this domestic labour for many hours day after day. You can help to change this!

The Washing Machine Project (TWMP) have created a manual washing machine called Divya, which is an innovative, sustainable and humanitarian solution to this issue. The Divya is an off-the-grid washer-dryer machine, that can help save up to 50% of water and 75% of the time compared to handwashing clothes.

The REACH NETWORK have formed a partnership with the TWMP through the Clean Clothes Campaign to:

SUPPORT: REACH’s strategy to Give Back to good causes

VOLUNTEERING: Utilise engineering and other skills of JLR employees

PROMOTION: Spreading the word about TWMP internally in JLR

FUNDRAISING: Encourage JLR employees to support fundraising activities

PLEASE NOTE:

We will be fundraising from April 2023 to March 2024 through various activities and have a set a preliminary goal of 10K, which we hope to increase dependent on support.
