Story
I’ve been reflecting on a difficult two years where I’ve lost close friends, family, and colleagues, often far too early in their lives. With this in mind, I want to experience new things, to live life to the full, and give a little back. It may sound corny, but it’s genuine.
So, my wife, Lorraine, and I have decided to embrace this head on. We’re joining a group of 15 volunteers to take 11 children with special educational needs and disabilities on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday this Easter to Lourdes, in France. At the same time, this will give the children’s parents and carers some much-deserved respite—an opportunity to do something different or have downtime with their families.
For many of these children, this will be the first time they have gone abroad and left their families. Fair to say this will be a new experience for me as well—taking me well outside my comfort zone. I’m feeling excited and apprehensive in equal measure.
As you would expect, this trip takes a lot of time and money to make happen. As volunteers, we’re paying our own way and then as a group we’re fundraising to cover all the costs for the children. To do my part, I’m running the Southampton Half Marathon on Sunday 6th April 2025 to raise as much as I possibly can.
As some of you may know, I’ve run half marathons and marathons before—always for charities that many of you have generously supported in the past. However, it’s been over 10 years since my last event; rest assured that the Southampton Half represents a big challenge for me.
This isn’t just about fundraising; it’s about preparing to give these children the care and support they deserve while away—to ensure they have an amazing time filled with fun and laughter—leaving them with unforgettable memories and new friendships.
We have joined several intensive training weekends to ensure we’re ready as a team—getting to know each other while learning new skills including Makaton and safeguarding.
Now to the really important part. On average, life can be three times more expensive when raising a child with special needs. To take one child away with us on holiday costs at least £1,500—so any donation you can make towards this would be greatly appreciated!
Here’s an idea of what your generosity could support:
- £1,500 would cover the full cost of taking one child with special needs away on holiday.
- £53 takes a child on a day trip into the mountains of Gavarnie
- £18 covers a child’s trip to the petting zoo
- £10 buys a child pizza on our big night out
- £2 brightens a child’s day with an ice cream.
I’m determined to raise enough funds to sponsor at least one child but I need your help! Please support me by donating through JustGiving. If you’re a UK taxpayer don’t forget to tick the Gift Aid box — it makes your donation go even further at no extra cost!
Together we can bring smiles, laughter, and hope to children who truly deserve it. Every contribution—big or small—makes a difference. Thank you for your generosity!
