RATS Animal Rescue Kennels Redevelopment

Anjuli Cooper is raising money for R.A.T.S.
The Re-homing Animal Telephone Service (RATS) is a small, completely self-funded, animal rehoming charity based in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. We provide love, care and protection for unwanted and abandoned dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs, and with our 'opt to adopt' philosophy, we look for committed, loving "furever" homes for our animals

Story

Building a safer, warmer future for every dog in our care

We’re excited to share that we’re launching a major redevelopment - a brand-new kennel facility built for the dogs who need us most.

Our current kennels have carried us through many years, but they were never built for this purpose. As our work evolves, so must the spaces we work in - and it’s time to create something better: a space that offers comfort, calm and the best possible start for every rescue dog’s new life.

Every day, our team goes above and beyond for dogs who have already been through so much. But the outdated layout, drainage challenges, limited natural light, and hard-to-clean surfaces can make day-to-day care more difficult. And for dogs who are anxious, fearful or recovering from trauma, the noise and busyness of the current kennels can be overwhelming.

While every dog in our care is safe and loved, we know they deserve more than just safety - they deserve comfort, calm, and a space to heal.

What’s happening this autumn

We’ve partnered with Kennelbuild, specialists in creating DEFRA-compliant animal facilities, and have already begun Phase 1, thanks to generous early support.

This autumn, we’ll be:

• Installing six temporary kennels in our quarantine area to stay operational

• Upgrading drainage and guttering to reduce flooding

• Improving electrical systems to keep everyone safe this winter

These interim steps are essential - but they’re just the beginning.

Help us build a new future

To bring Phase 2 to life - a brand-new block of 12 purpose-built kennels - we need to raise £500,000.

This new facility will transform life for our dogs and the people who care for them, by:

• Providing warmth, fresh air, and natural light to reduce stress and support recovery

• Improving safety, drainage, insulation, and hygiene to promote health and comfort

• Reducing noise and visual stress through thoughtful design and layout

• Offering calm, secure, and healing spaces - especially for anxious or reactive dogs needing quiet away from passing people and barking

• Giving our team safer, more efficient working conditions so they can provide the best care possible

A place of hope for dogs and humans alike

Imagine a place where dogs are comfortable and safe, with plenty of warmth and natural light. A calm environment designed to reduce stress and support their recovery. A kennel where every dog can feel secure and start to rebuild trust.

For the volunteers and staff who dedicate themselves to these dogs, it will be a safer, more supportive space - designed to value their wellbeing as much as the animals’.

This rebuild is more than bricks and beams - it’s about dignity, trust, and giving every dog the comfort and care they deserve as they adjust to life in temporary kennels. It’s about creating an environment where real progress can begin, where every small moment of peace restores hope, and where the dedication of our team is matched by the facilities they work in.
