Story
Having worked with Read foundation before, I have chosen this charity to help raise funds to play my small part in these humanitarian crises. The images coming through from Turkey and Syria are utterly heartbreaking 💔
Read foundation are on the ground in both areas and have diverted resources from their education projects to the humanitarian effort.
Here are some stats:
A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale has struck south-eastern Turkey, near the Syrian border, less than 12 hours after an initial 7.8 magnitude tremor hit in the early hours on Monday 6th February.
Initial reports indicate the impact has been devastating in areas that already host a high number of displaced and vulnerable families, who have fled the civil war in Syria. Turkey is the worlds largest host of refugees with 3.7 million Syrians taking refuge in the country.
Turkey’s disaster management authority has raised the official death toll from Monday’s quake more than 16000 people. (Thursday am)
The combined total, with the 2,470 deaths recorded officially in Syria, has reached 9,578.
Rescuers warn time is running out to find survivors in southern Turkey and northern Syria after two huge earthquakes on Monday.
In northern Syria, some international aid is getting through, but access to rebel-held areas is severely limited because of damaged. The first 7.8 magnitude quake struck near Gaziantep in the early hours of Monday, followed by a 7.5 magnitude tremor hours later. Stats (BBC)
