Story
‘Literacy and libraries are inextricably linked to opportunity and empowerment. Increasing levels of literacy increases life opportunities, earnings and health outcomes. Raising literacy levels across a community will have collective economic and social benefits.’*
This year I will be undertaking the Inaugural Coast to Coast ultramarathon. Starting in Chagford I will run/walk/crawl non-stop from Chagford to Lynmouth, crossing Dartmoor and Exmoor in under 24hrs.
As the Business Development & Fundraising Manager for Libraries Unlimited, I see every day that what happens in a library is so much more than just books, and how our services truly change lives.
With two children of my own, I am particularly passionate about the positive impact our charity has on literacy inequality in the Southwest. A child’s earliest years are pivotal to their development and life chances. Research shows an undeniable link between literacy levels and social inequality, and that the benefits of encouraging Reading for Pleasure affect all areas of health and wellbeing.
We are currently living through a cost of literacy crisis – which isn’t limited to children and young people. It was reported in 2022 that nine million adults in the UK are facing literacy challenges, which consequently has a huge impact on educational outcomes, employment and our economy.
Whilst our core services are funded by Devon County Council and Torbay Council, as an independent charity we are completely reliant on public support to continue our year-round provision.
Your support will enable us to continue to provide a lifeline to our local communities, ensuring that everyone has equal access and opportunity to connect, learn and thrive.
