Thank you for visiting my page.
In September 2018, Amelie, a current pupil at Duke of Kent, was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, she was only 5 years old. Ewing’s Sarcoma is a rare form of soft tissue and bone cancer. This day changed Amelie and her families lives forever.
Amelie complained of pain in her leg after a dance class at school. By the time she was diagnosed the tumour was too large to save her leg and she had an amputation above the knee a few days after her 6th birthday. The cancer had also spread to her lungs.
After enduring 15 rounds of intensive chemotherapy at UCLH, Amelie has defied all the odds. She has not stopped inspiring and astounding us with her amazing recovery. She is now a happy, active and confident 11-year-old girl. Her determination and grit has helped her use her prosthetic leg. She now bikes, ski’s, plays sports, horse rides and enjoys life with her family and friends. Despite her zest for life the trauma she has suffered gives her emotional and physical challenges every single day.
Sarcoma UK have supported Amelie and her family through this gruelling journey and Amelie’s recovery and progress has been incredible. Sadly, this is not the case for many children or adults diagnosed with this brutal form of cancer.
Sarcoma is very rare and only accounts for 2% of all cancers and often gets undiagnosed. By the time they are, the tumour is usually the size of a large baked bean can. The cancer develops in the bone and soft tissue and is very hard to treat. Treatment plans are incredibly harsh and the chemotherapy has not really changed for 50 years: Funding is desperately needed to help raise awareness to help get earlier diagnosis, research new treatment methods and improve outcomes.
Thank you for your support.
