Event: Jurassic Coast Ultra Challenge 2024, on 18 May 2024
In memory of My Dad
We provide emotional and practical support to families with a seriously ill child.

Story

Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity supports families who have a child with a life-threatening or terminal illness. When a child has a serious illness, family life is turned upside down and time becomes more precious than ever. Rainbow Trust pairs each family with an expert Family Support Worker who enables them to make the most of time together, giving them practical and emotional support, whenever they need it, for as long as is needed. We support the whole family including parents, carers, the unwell child, brothers, sisters and grandparents.

Polly (mum of two and marching well into her late 40s!) is taking on the Jurassic Coast Ultra Challenge, walking 100km (non stop, day into night) from Corfe Castle, down to Swanage, along through Lulworth Cove, past Durdle Door, with ups & downs to Weymouth (half way) before continuing past Portland Bill, Chesil Beach and on to West Bay before the finish line in the vibrant town of Bridport.

With over 2,300 metres of climb, this is arguably the hardest Ultra in the UK and Polly knows that her feet are going to scream. Having suffered nerve and ligament damage from trekking to the South Pole some years ago, her feet are not as strong as her mind, but that will not stop her from completing this epic challenge (she will drag herself across the finish line if needed). Polly's pain will quite literally be the children's gain, as she raises funds and awareness for the Rainbow Trust Children's Charity, who have been activity involved in supporting a family at the school both her children attend.

Polly quotes: "I think the night section along Chesil Beach will be the hardest part. 1am, 2am, 3am ... as support goes home, I will have been walking for over 13 hours, covered around 50km of ups and downs along the Jurassic cliffs (my feet will be screaming) and I will still have another 50km to go and on exhausting lose boulders and beach material."

This challenge is also a very personal moment in memory of her beloved father, Max, who she misses deeply but she knows he would be proud of her "moment of total and utter madness".

"This is going to hurt!"
