Story
I’m running the London Marathon on 21st April for The Farming Community Network (FCN). Through my work at Farmers Weekly, I hear stories every day about the difficulties our vital farming community faces, ranging from extreme weather events, rural crime, farm safety and excessive red tape.
Farmers spend long hours working alone, often in isolation, which can exacerbate feelings of loneliness and depression. Sadly, they are at a higher risk of mental health issues and suicide. I have also been very saddened to learn recently of a much-loved school friend and farmer who took his own life due to immense pressures.
The FCN charity supports British farmers and their families for a wide variety of issues, including isolation, stress and anxiety, depression, animal welfare, family disputes and financial difficulties.
Over 6,000 people a year benefit from their support and with British farming facing deep uncertainty in the coming years, the workload of FCN volunteers is expected to increase significantly.
The FCN has also just launched a new UK-wide partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support to help improve the support available to those living with cancer in rural areas.
Running is a great way to improve anyone’s physical and mental health. My marathon training has been an exciting journey. Like farming, I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs. But I’ll give it everything on race day and soak up every second of the experience.
Any donations towards this great cause would be massively appreciated. Thanks for your support!
