Story
In January I'll be attempting to complete the 108-mile Winter Spine Challenger. It's an entirely selfish endeavor and I've been helped by lots of lovely people who have offered advice, company, and equipment. I've been able to buy the exhaustive amount of kit required to ensure I'm as warm, comfortable, and safe as possible. When/should I finish I'll travel back home and eat what I want, perhaps watch telly, catch up with my family and loved ones, and sleep soundly in my bed.
Not everyone is as lucky. There are so many causes to support and it's difficult to know who deserves support over others as the needs are so great. But, i'm going with a cause that's close to my heart.
I've had the privilege of working with people who ended up classified as refugees in one way or another for over 25 years. It has become more difficult than at any point in history for a refugee to restart their lives in exile. Not because they don't want to, far from it, because the system makes it hard. At the root of much of this is a lack of safe housing for people to start from. If refugees are given a place to stay they can look for work, they can make connections, they can access the same rights as the rest of us. So I'm supporting a small but important organisation called Refugees At Home.
Refugees At Home is a UK charity which connects those with a spare room in their home to refugees and asylum seekers in need of somewhere to stay.
So far, we have made over 5,400 placements with hosts who have a spare room and a kind heart. This translates into over half a million nights not spent on the street or riding the night buses.
If you would like to consider hosting or volunteering, please visit www.refugeesathome.org where you can register online.
