Story

Thanks for visiting my Just Giving Page

I am raising money for 2 charities that mean a lot to me...Reverse Rett and the British Heart Foundation ❤️

I will be taking part in the Manchester marathon which is my first and will be a huge challenge for me both mentally and physically.

Very recently my 4 year old niece Tilly was diagnosed with Rett syndrome. Tilly faces many challenges and Rett syndrome has an enormous impact on everything she does.

Rett is a rare neurological condition which typically has no signs or symptoms in the first few months of life. After a period of typical development previous healthy little girls show signs of slowed or stalled development between the ages of 1 and 2. In many cases regression and severe loss of skills leaving multiple disabilities and complexities.

Rett is typically caused by a faulty gene on the X chromosome. It largely affects girls ( 1 in 10 to 12 thousand) although can be found in boys.

Most children with Rett are unable to speak or use their hands .Many can't walk , have breathing problems, suffer seizures and have many other medical issues.

There is currently no cure for Rett but there is hope. In 1999 scientists identified the genetic mutation and in 2007 they reversed the condition in mice. Gene therapy is at human trial stage now.

Reverse Rett is a fantastic charity I'm proud to be fundraising for that will undoubtedly be invaluable to my family as they face this new diagnosis and the road ahead with Tilly.

Change is not only possible.....its within reach
