Story
Every 3 minutes someone in the UK develops dementia.
As those that know me well will be aware, my Mum, Marguerite became one the above statistics when she was diagnosed with the early onset of vascular dementia around 12 years ago and she now resides in a local care home. She is no longer able to walk, doesn't recognise me or any family member and is struggling to be coherent with her speech. Following her diagnosis, my dad stepped up and took on all her caring needs for several years. He was fantastic. However the whole experience took a heavy toll on him and unfortunately he died in 2022 following a stroke.
A diagnosis like dementia is a truly devastating diagnosis for any person and for their loved ones and as most people know, there is no effective treatment. Therefore I am raising money for the Alzheimers Society to help fund the research that is needed so that one day such a diagnosis won't be so terrifying for someone and their family.
I have been successful in gaining an entry via a ballot to the spectacular ultra running event that is the Lavaredo Ultra trail. The event takes place in the Dolomites in Northern Italy and covers approximately 120km and includes over 5800 metres of ascent. It is longest distance and climb level I have ever attempted and so it would be a huge boost and incentive for me, if while I train and undertake such a challenge that I'm doing so with the knowledge that we are helping raising money for such a worthy cause.
Many thanks for you support!
