#TEAMSTEWART254 - Cycle Challenge, 25 November 2023

Story

My nephew Marcus Stewart discovered he had Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in January last year (2022) and publicly revealed his diagnosis in September. MND is a rare incurable condition affecting the brain and nerves. It eventually leads to death, mostly within 3 years of diagnosis but some people can live with it for many years.

Marcus has chosen to put his efforts into raising research funds & MND awareness for Darby Rimmer as this charity was set-up by a former professional football player. This gave Marcus a strong link to his profession and access to a network of people all fighting the same challenge.

The football community have been superb in rallying around Marcus and his wife Louise culminating in many charity events. In addition, family and friends have also rallied around with their own fund raisings activities, one of them being this charity cycle ride taking in 7 of Marcus’s ex-football clubs in 7 days of cycling.

We are aiming to take a small group of cyclists (no more than 35) covering over 1,000 kilo-meters climbing over 9,000 meters in height and visiting 7 of Marcus's football clubs that he played for Namely, in chronological order; Bristol Rovers, Huddersfield Town, Ipswich Town, Sunderland, Bristol City, Yeovil Town, and Exeter City.

We hoping to raise over £10,000 between all the cyclists, along with donations we may receive when on the road. All donations are welcome no matter how small, they all help and contribute to the fight against MND.

About the charity

Former Liverpool, Bradford City and Bolton Wanderers footballer Stephen Darby and close friend and British Forces Veteran Chris Rimmer have partnered together to launch the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation. Stephen and Chris both have Motor Neurone Disease and have created a Foundation to create awareness of MND, to fund and assist research into the illness with the quest of finding a cure for the illness, to raise funds and offer grants to those with MND, as well as creating a network to help provide information and emotional support network for those diagnosed with the disease.
