Story

Thanks for stopping by and visiting my JustGiving page.

This is the fundraiser for my Lands End to John o Groats World Record push I'll be embarking in my everyday wheelchair starting on 12th June 2024 for the brilliant charity Canine Partners. I'll be pushing the entire 967 miles solo on roads and cycle paths in my day chair and if I pull it off I'll be the first person ever to do it in an everyday non racing wheelchair and the first complete paraplegic to do it too. This will be my 6th LEJOG trip in total. The last time I took this on was just before lockdown and as many of you know I sadly had to cut my trip short midway through and get home due to the country going into imminent Lockdown the next day. Hopefully all goes to plan this time, we don't get another pandemic and everything goes smoothly.

A bit about me, My name is Peter Smorthit. I'm a 32 year old T10 complete paraplegic and have been a full time wheelchair user for the past 13 years. I was involved in a scaffold collapse whilst working on a building site as an electrician back in January 2011 age 19, which severed my spinal cord and left me paralysed at T10 Spinal Level. I also sustained a secondary spinal injury at T4/5 as well which further affects my balance and ability to self regulate my body temp. Spent the next 7 months in a Spinal unit and was told I'd never walk again. The first 8 weeks of that was spent in a medically induced coma and I battled sepsis during my time there as well. I've also since had 3 full on strokes, the last of which was just 2 years ago but won't let that stop me and continue to live an active life to the fullest I can. Helping out brilliant causes like Canine Partners along the way too with my marathons, Triathlons and crazy challenges like this one.

Canine Partners work with disabled people and partner them to life changing assistance dogs. They provide a vital lifeline to so many disabled people, help maintain their independence and ability to do many of the everyday tasks you and I take for granted with the help of an assistance dog at their side. It often keeps them out of hospital too. Without charities like Canine Partners a lot of disabled people would be in and out of hospital a lot more, be completely reliant on carers 24/7 for even the simplest of tasks and many probably wouldn't be here with us today. Being disabled myself I appreciate all the work Canine Partners do to help disabled people remain independent with the use of assistance dogs and it's definitely something that strikes a chord with me and I hold close to my heart. I'm doing this Lands End To John o Groats push for Canine Partners this June to say a massive thanks for all the amazing work they do, to help raise awareness of the importance of assistance dogs and to highlight just how vital they are to the lives of disabled people. I'm also hoping with this challenge I can raise funds to enable them to continue to help and improve the lives of many more disabled people with the use of Assistance Dogs.

Plan is to set off from Lands End at first light on the 12th June 2024. I've not set myself any targets as such so I'll be taking it at a nice comfortable pace, probably aim to do 30-40 miles a day. On the flatter sections I might get away with a bit more but I'll see how it goes. I'll be pulling all the supplies I need with me on a custom built trailer and be using a mix of B&b and camp stops on route. I will also have my tracker on and will post the link shortly before setting off so you'll be able to follow my progress as I go. As always I'm super excited and can't wait to take this on again. Preparations are well underway on the final details, Authorities have given me the green light and Guiness too so pretty much good to go. Should be another great trip ahead. Looking forward to it.
