Story

On the 30th September 2017 the most incredible woman was taken from this world at the far too young age of 63. My Mum, Jane Dunlop. In September 2016 she was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer whilst my wife and I were living in New Zealand.

We returned to the UK two weeks later as her prognosis was less than three months.

The fact is that more than half of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer die within 3 months and although survival rates have improved enormously for most cancers, this is sadly not the case for pancreatic cancer.

Mum was a fighter and defied the odds, meaning we got to spend approximately one year making more incredible memories. Unfortunately on the 30th September Mum passed away leaving the world to feel a whole lot emptier. Whilst she had some incredible professionals around her, ultimately the aggressive treatment often used with Pancreatic cancer proved to be too much.

My Mum was a completely selfless person, she would do anything for anyone and was just one of the most caring and generous people you could have ever met.

She was a partner of a law firm, loving wife to my Dad of over 40 years, and Mother to five sons. Her funeral brought hundreds of people from all over the UK as she touched so many lives.

I have always wanted to do an epic challenge in memory of my Mum and to try and raise as much money as I can for Pancreatic Cancer UK. I am hopeful that with increased funding and awareness, diagnosis and prognosis of this awful disease will be improved. I don’t want any other families to go through the same experience mine did.

Pancreatic Cancer UK is dedicated to taking on this injustice using every possible means. They're supporting people with pancreatic cancer now, campaigning, and funding vital research to transform the future. Help them to make the breakthroughs that people with pancreatic cancer so desperately need.

So after considering multiple ideas, I have decided to take on the monumental challenge of running 12 official marathons in 12 months in 2025. This replicates the 12 months Mum battled pancreatic cancer for.

I am not taking this challenge on lightly and I have the full support of my wife, employer, and wider family and friends. I will do everything I can to push this and hopefully smash all expectations. I want to truly raise as much money as I can for this cause so close to my heart. We need to do as much as we can so that what happened to my Mum, maybe one day won’t happen to others.

The 12 Marathons I will hopefully be running are as follows:

* Forte Sea Front Marathon Pisa / Italy - confirmed 05/01 COMPLETED ✅

* Run For Cake Marathon Peterborough / England - confirmed 09/02 COMPLETED ✅

* Great Welsh Marathon / Wales - confirmed 16/03 COMPLETED ✅

It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with the deadliest common cancer die within three months. That’s why they need and deserve more. More research, more funding, more breakthroughs. More than hope. Together we’ll make that possible.
