Motor neurone disease (MND) affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord that control muscle function. This leads to diverse outcomes for everyone, gradually eroding lives, step by step, word by word, and breath by breath. Sadly, it’s a terminal and incurable condition that deprives individuals of everything.
Former Leeds Rhinos scrum-half Rob Burrow CBE received a diagnosis of motor neurone disease in December 2019, merely two years after concluding his illustrious playing career by leading Leeds to a record eighth Super League Grand Final victory, and once again brought MND to the public’s attention. But there are so many others Doddie Weir, Stephen Hawking, Mike Gregory plus many others who have sadly passed away.
There are approximately 5,000 adults in the UK currently grappling with MND. On average, six individuals receive an MND diagnosis daily. The MND Association is dedicated to enhancing care accessibility, financing research endeavours, and advocating for those living with or impacted by MND.
It is with sadness that one of our esteemed members Frank Heffernan has recently been diagnosed with this disabling decease; And as Rob’s impact has galvanized numerous individuals to join the fight against MND. Now Frank is wanting to do the same. He isn’t expecting you to replicate the incredible feats achieved by Kevin Sinfield CBE, such as the Ultra 7in7, where Kevin embarked on a monumental journey from Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh to Old Trafford in Manchester in just seven days, covering an average of around 40 miles per day. Nor is he suggesting you undertake challenges like Kevin’s previous endeavours, including the 7in7—seven marathons in seven days in November 2020—or The Extra Mile, a 101-mile run culminating at Headingley Stadium a year later.
