Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am doing this challenge again in memory of my Mum, Delia Dunn, who was diagnosed with Myeloma in February 2009. She fought this awful disease with immense bravery and always with a smile on her face. Life was a rollercoaster with high highs but also very low lows, for 7 tough years, living with a broken back, end stage kidney failure and heart failure for most of these years. Mum sadly lost her battle in February 2016.

Myeloma, also known as multiple myeloma, is a blood cancer arising from plasma cells. At any one time there are around 24,000 people living with myeloma in the UK. It accounts for 15 per cent of blood cancers, and two per cent of all cancers. Myeloma mainly affects those over the age of 65, however, it has been diagnosed in people much younger. Unlike many cancers, myeloma does not exist as a lump or tumour. Myeloma affects where bone marrow is normally active in an adult, such as in the bones of the spine, skull, pelvis, rib cage, long bones of the arms and legs and the areas around the shoulders and hips. No matter when this is found, there is no cure.

Since Mum's diagnosis, I have been working on raising as much money for Myeloma UK doing various events, hiking, dry month, boxing day dips, everything I can think of to raise money for this fantastic charity, who not only support the patients and their families, but are also researching a cure for this disease. Up until the end of 2023, I have raised a total of £24,514.67. I will keep pushing to raise as much as I can and as much awareness of this cancer, as I can.

As people know, I had Syndesmosis surgery on my ankle in 2023, this is 3 months non weight bearing and then a long road to recovery with intense physio. At the beginning of February 2024 I was signed off from physio, I have been working hard for over a year to get strength & stability back in my ankle, now I'm working hard on getting my fitness back. What better way prove I'm back, than to train for a half marathon?!

I am not a runner, I never have been, so this won't be an easy task to train for, it will be my 1st (& probably last!!!) half marathon.
