Story

I am taking on The Big Golf Race to raise well deserved funds for St. Oswalds Hospice and we need your help.

What is The Big Golf Race?

I aim to complete Four Rounds of golf (72 holes) in just one day, with the odd family member and friend popping in to boost my morale and show their support throughout the day. I will be up against daylight, starting at around 6am and finishing around 730pm on Thursday 4th July 2024. This will be taking place at High Gosforth Park Golf Club, who have been fantastic in helping me achieve this challenge, even waivered the green fees.

So why I am taking on the challenge?

My mam was diagnosed with Lung Cancer in July 2022, which resulted in an operation to remove one of her lungs. The operation was somewhat a success, however, the cancer had already started to spread, meaning the result wasn't what we hoped for, some cancer remained, and so a long slog of immunotherapy and cheomotheraphy began. We were advised that whilst this cancer is incurable, it is manageable and my mam has bravely fought this with everything she has. The cancer has since spread, with lesions in her brain and back leading to further radiotherapy treatments. My Mam has remained so unbelievably positive throughout, tackling everything head on with every ounce of strength and determination, always with a smile, and a 'I can do this' mindset! I am so unbelievably proud of her fight!

Early on after diagnosis, my mother was put in contact with St Oswalds Hospice. The support and care she has received there is indescribable. From stays to master pain management to relaxing reflexology sessions, my mam has always appreciated their care and support. She has always felt safe, very well cared for and listened to.

During my mam's several stays at St Oswalds, the care that she received had been unbelievable. Nothing has even been too much for them. They have always done everything they can to keep my Mam comfortable, well, and informed. They have also supported my Dad in many ways.

Places like St. Oswalds make what is a very difficult time in anyone's life just that little bit easier and I will be forever grateful for everything that they have done for my mother.

My Mam's treatment has now ended, she just isn't well enough for any more invasive treatment. Although we don't know how much longer we have left with her, we continue to make the most of every day. All my family are so incredibly proud of my Mam.

St. Oswalds have provided so much to us all since my Mams diagnosis, and whatever I can raise will help them continue to do this for others. Please give all you can, it really will make a difference ❤️❤️
