Story
My dad, Roy, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in late 2017. Seven years later, the disease has relentlessly taken its toll. Dad now needs help with even the most simple of everyday tasks.
Dementia is a devastating disease which irreversibly changes the lives of those affected by the illness and their carers. Mum did an amazing job of looking after dad for many years. But, late in 2023, it become too much and dad moved into full-time care.
Alzheimer's is the leading cause of death in the UK and many other places around the world. There's no cure. A few recent medical breakthroughs give hope that the disease will eventually be treatable or, eventually, cured. But there's a long way to go. That's why I'm fundraising again for Alzheimer's research. Having seen the disease up close, we need to do everything we can to fight back and stop it destroying so many lives.
So, I'm planning to walk solo and unsupported around the island of Ireland. It's a journey of 2,500 km (1550 miles) following a number of long-distance trails, linked together by rural roads and tracks. The trek will take me around the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, beginning and ending in Dublin.
Start date: 8 July 2024
With a target of walking 20 miles each day, I know it's going to be tough, not least given the poor weather this year! But every penny raised will be worth the effort and discomfort. I am hugely grateful for your support.
