Pier-2-Pier by Panto Pony Challenge
Our challenge is to ride a tandem bike, dressed as a pantomime horse, from coast to coast, starting with the back wheel in the sea at Blackpool and finishing with our front wheel in the sea in Scarborough. It will be a gruelling 167 miles coast to coast route, planned to cross the Pennines, Yorkshire Wolds and get as close to the Worth Valley and Manorlands Hospice as possible.
On the 20th July 2024, as a pair, we will ride the full distance coast to coast, possibly swapping seats on route, as only the front person can see where we are going, but we are determined to ride all the way dressed as the Panto Pony. The steed is ‘trusty rather than rusty!’ but what better way to start and end the challenge with a dip of wheels and hooves in both the Irish and the North Sea. During the ride we are planning to set a new World Record for the fastest 100 miles ridden by a pantomime horse on a tandem*.
The challenge, ‘Pier-2-Pier by Panto Pony’ has its own Facebook and Instagram pages which will contain updates on training, planning, practice venues, the route, other events, appearances and, most importantly, live updates during the challenge itself.
We started our Pantomime Horse journey a couple of years ago competing in the world-famous Mascot Gold Cup at Wetherby Racecourse in 2022 where we won ‘Best in Show’. Topping this, in 2023, winning the race and taking the trophy home; a coveted title we will be aiming to defend on the 28th April this year. Our appearance as Panto Pony in various Fell Running Races, Oxenhope Straw Race, Galas and countless other local events has just grown her pedigree, but this challenge is going to be the Grand National of them all, with perfect ground conditions the going will be good to strong.
We are hoping to raise as much money as possible for Sue Ryder and Manorlands Hospice. A hospice that the ‘Panto Pony’ has supported for many years and one that is close not only to our hearts but to the hearts of so many people in the Worth Valley and beyond.
Please donate whatever you can or send us your wishes, as we take on this very serious challenge. Let’s together try and set new World Records in fundraising as well as Panto Pony’s speed record. Spread the word around your family, friends and colleagues, keep your eye on our social media pages and put a note in your diary. When we are all weighed in prior to our attempt, please come along and support us.
Thank you
*World Record attempt to still be ratified by Guinness, but the application has been entered.
