The cat’s finally out of the bag… I'm running the BMW Berlin Marathon 2025 for Dementia UK!
Berlin will be my first official marathon. It is also one of the world majors so I feel super fortunate to be running it for a cause that’s very close to my families hearts.
My incredible nanny Audrey was sadly diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2005. I was age 9 and my Sister was 4. Nan battled with this horrible disease for 6 years with my amazing Grandad being her full time carer. I feel so lucky to have remembered who Nanny truly was before becoming unwell. Her kindness and humor will be something I will cherish forever.
I want to take on this challenge not only for Nanny but for my Grandad. Dementia is life changing and I cannot imagine the strength that was needed for those hard 6 years. Grandad is now 90 years old. He is the most remarkable man and loved Nanny right up until the end. He is the true testament to sticking to your vows; as the saying goes ‘in sickness and in health’. The support and rest-bite care that Grandad received was priceless and lifted some stress from day to day life.
This year marks 10 years since my Mum took on the challenge of trekking The Great Wall of China for Alzheimers. She has now passed the batton to me!
Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Our nurses, called Admiral Nurses, provide life-changing care to families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. They help people with dementia stay independent for longer, and support the people caring for them so they have the strength to cope with the bad days, and the energy to enjoy the good days. They have the time to listen and the knowledge to solve problems, helping families take back control when they are struggling.
