Story
Hi, my name is Paul Standring and I'm pleased to be part of the Potato Heads team for this great event.
All my life I've been enthusiastic about sport and enjoyed participating in many types.
I love being outdoors and one of my favourite places in the UK is the Lake District where I have done various walks including Scafell and a 26 mile walk for charity. This year's Race the Sun is a test I'm really looking forward to with the additions of cycling and canoeing to the walking, the most important reason for doing this event is to raise much needed funds for a vital and worthwhile cause, I have two grown up sons but still appreciate how important it is to support the vital work for children being done by this charity - Action Medical Research for Children.
The Task:
As a team we have set ourselves the challenge of completing the Race The Sun event that takes place in the Lake District on Saturday 13th July 2024. This event will see us conquer a 23 mile off road mountain bike ride, a gruelling uphill 2.5 mile hike to the summit of Old Man of Coniston and last but not least a 2 mile kayak route on one of the many beautiful lakes that this area has to offer. All leading to the finish for a well deserved pint, I hope.
Why are we doing this?
Every year we love a challenge and this year was no exception. Upon scrolling on multiple sites to see what we could do next, we couldn’t help but stop and read the fantastic work that Action Medical Research does for children and the guidance they provide for families that are battling with all types of illnesses. After a brief discussion we committed as a team to this charity and signed up for there event in July.
The plan…
Our target as a team is to reach a total donation of £2000 for the charity which will help support the future research for Meningitis, Leukaemia, Polio & childhood Cancers. This funding will also provide vital materials to help families understand and deal with adapting their family life to ensure every day is a positive one.
