We are a group of surgeons and health care workers specialising in the treatment of pancreas, liver, and bile duct cancer.

On September 21st, 2023, we will be riding 130 miles, Coast-to-Coast (Whitehaven to South Shields) to raise awareness about these cancers and support our charity OPAL Fund.

In the UK, approximately 10,500 people are newly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year. 466,003 people died from pancreatic cancer worldwide in 2020.

Compared to the 1990’s, there has been a 167% increase in the incidence of liver cancer with over 6000 people diagnosed each year in the UK.

While surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, ablative therapy, and combination therapy are modalities of treatment offered for these cancers, survival rates remain a challenge. Ten-year survival following a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is 5% and for liver cancer 10%. The outcomes following treatment of bile duct cancer too is poor.

We are dedicated to treating patients with pancreatic liver and bile duct cancers. Our team is also actively involved in clinical and basic science research striving to improve treatment and survival of our patients.

In addition, we in Oxford offer total pancreatectomy and islet autotransplant to a select group of patients with chronic pancreatitis, transforming life.

OPAL fund is an Oxford University Hospitals Charity that supports clinical and novel scientific research projects along with services for our in-patients with pancreatic, liver and bile duct cancer and also the maintenance of a dedicated database which lends itself to better patient outcomes.
