Story

When our 10-year-old son Oscar was hit by a van on his way home from school, it was our worst nightmare come true. We were taken to Sheffield Children’s Hospital in the ambulance, and greeted by a room full of doctors, nurses and other professionals, all waiting to take care of our boy.

Those first few hours are a blur but I remember feeling like, once we got to the hospital, I could be confident everything that could possibly be done for my lovely boy was being done. And not only that, but being done with kindness to Oscar and to us, his panicking family.

Oscar had a concussion including some very frightening amnesia, and damage to his legs which meant he couldn’t walk for a while, and was admitted to the neurology ward where he spent two nights. He was looked after by a team of the most professional, kind, knowledgeable people - not only in terms of the care he needed medically, but who all made an effort to keep him cheerful.

Oscar says: “I enjoyed playing with the lego. But my favourite thing was when Izzy the doctor showed me how to find the blind spot in my vision, and let me borrow her biro all day so I could get the hang of it. Once I got back to school, I impressed all my friends with the trick.

“Everyone at the Children’s Hospital took good care of me, and they were really nice.”

Any questions we had, whether about medical issues or where to buy pizza, were answered quickly and with a smile. It makes all the difference in the world when you’re going through something so horrible to have a team of people looking after you who go out of their way to be kind.

How they keep that up with so many families, day after day, I don’t know. I have so much admiration for every single one of them.

Oscar is home now, all healed and back to normal, thank God. A massive thank you from us to the whole team at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Now Oscar is thankfully better again, we'd like to raise money to show our thanks for everything the wonderful team at the hospital did for us.

Throughout March 2024, Oscar and Anna will run a marathon together (in short runs of 5-6k). Please sponsor us if you can.
