Story

Walk for World Hepatitis Day 2024!

In light of World Hepatitis Day 2024 we invite our colleagues across the Nottingham Hepatitis C Operational Delivery Network to walk 15.6 miles from Mablethorpe to Skegness as a fundraiser for The Hepatitis C Trust.

The Nottingham Hepatitis C Operational Delivery Network (HCV ODN) are a dedicated team of multiple services across Nottinghamshire, Derby and Lincolnshire who are passionate about the mirco-eilimination of the Hepatitis C virus.

Our walk aims to bring people together who care about the same cause and to mark World Hepatitis Day by spreading awareness of Hepatitis C and the importance of getting tested!

Hepatitis C (HCV) is a curable virus that no one should have to those their lives to. In doing this sponsored walk for World Hepatitis Day 2024, we hope to raise awareness of HCV and remember those who have sadly lost their lives to the virus. In raising awareness we hope to encourage people to get tested and into treatment, and eventually eliminate HCV in England.

Your donations will go towards continuing the extraordinary work of our many brilliant Hepatitis C Trust community volunteers and peers who go above and beyond using their passion for supporting those at risk of HCV to support patients into testing and treatment. The volunteers and peers are vital for patient support and we couldn't do this without them. We want to ensure continuation of their brilliant work, as well as highlighting their commitment and dedication to a meaningful cause.

Our Patient Feedback from across the ODN:

"I don’t think that you can do more than saving people’s lives. Excellent services and can’t fault the dedication and support I’ve been given."

"Workers took time to explain things to you. Caring, listened, had the time to make sure you understood the risks. Feel this is a great service – needs to carry on, very important as I didn’t know I had Hep C until I got tested. Thank you."

"Getting my Hep C treatment complete, they did check on me throughout my treatment. Now Hep C negative, thank goodness! They give you some much advice, break things down for you. Fab service, great workers."

"Cheers babe that’s all good news 4 me so thank u for caring about me and (x my dog). Thank u 4 taking the time 4 my test results it means a lot 2 us both that someone somewhere does actually care about us. As u no me and (x my dog) haven’t got nothing or no-one else who gives a f*** about at all. We’ve got each other and we’re used 2 that. Anyway thank u."

Our Patient Story:

Our patient attended a drop in at a substance use service in the community where the peer team were doing blood-borne virus testing. Our patient stated they had 5 minutes spare and wanted to do our peer team a favour by taking a test as they weren't busy. Our patient said they had previously injected drugs, but not for a number of years, so weren't expecting to be positive. The patient had their bloods taken and results given. Our patient was shocked with the result outcome, as they had come back positive. After speaking with the peer team and receiving their advice and support, our patient was reassured and very happy to be referred to access treatment. Our patient related to the symptoms of HCV, though often there are none/no obvious signs. Our patient completed their treatment and has received their first negative result for HCV post-treatment, with their next follow up test due soon. Our patient was incredibly grateful to the peer team for being at the substance use service that day, to offer him a test by chance and to support him into treatment. Not only was our patient grateful for the support for themselves, but also as it opened the door to get their partner tested.
