Story
Longstanding member of The Norwich Fitness Academy Samantha, sadly lost her daughter Amanda to cancer last year. We want to show our support to Samantha and her family by raising funds for a charity of her choice. We are taking a team of 20 up to The Peak District, where we will take on the Edale Skyline challenge to raise funds for Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. The Edale Skyline is A challenging 22 mile circular route along the ridge of Edale valley.
Here are some words from Amanda's sister Sarah-
"Amanda was an exceptional woman.
She loved running, working out, and was an advocate for living a healthy lifestyle. After complaining of an intermittent rib pain for several months, she was eventually diagnosed with EGFR+ lung cancer - a genetic mutation more common in women who have never smoked. Although treatable, this type of cancer is incurable.
Amanda faced all her treatment with such powerful, positive force and entered a clinical trial. Despite all the side effects, she kept her social calendar crammed full, travelled when she was able, and savoured every experience the world could offer.
Despite some promising results we lost Amanda 15 months later in November 2022, aged 35.
Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is dedicated to helping everyone affected by the disease. Importantly, it also forms part of the Less Survivable Cancer Taskforce, working to close the “deadly cancer gap” - where some cancers have seen remarkable progress in survivability, but others are just as deadly as they were 40 years ago.
People diagnosed with these cancers have a shockingly low life expectancy. Today, on average, the chance of someone surviving for five years after being diagnosed with one of these cancers is only 16%. This is the deadly cancer gap.
Amanda was an adventurer, who loved hiking. We are so grateful to The Norwich Fitness Academy for organising this challenge, and raising awareness for our chosen charity in Amanda’s memory.
Any support, no matter how small, will make a difference for someone else."
