We raise funds for Green Memorial Hospital to rebuild and develop medical services

Story

In March 2023, more than 60 bicycle riders from around the World, braved the elements on a four-day 475 km charity bike ride, from Arugam Bay on the South East Coast of Sri Lanka to Manipay in the North of the Island. The 2023 Ride for Ceylon was the seventh annual charity bike ride to raise funds for Green Memorial Hospital, in Jaffna. Each year, cyclists raise funds and ride hundreds of kilometres, to support the hospital’s development and operations.

The Green Memorial Hospital is Sri Lanka’s oldest private hospital and is also not for profit. This hospital provides medical care to everybody who needs it, nobody is turned away for lack of funds or medical insurance.

In 2023, with my first Ride for Ceylon, many of you helped me raise the funds for the hospital’s new a state of the art X-ray machine.

In March of 2024, I will be back on my bike, raising funds for the Green Memorial Hospital’s Paediatric Ward. For this cause, a team of 65 riders will cover 485 km of gruelling terrain, for four days, from the Kandyan hills to Manipay.

“Fundraising is but a tool to achieve a collaborative dream. You might be but a stone, but together you can build bridges to a brighter tomorrow. Piece by piece, we can make the world a better place to be.”

The Ride4Ceylon Team has its nucleus in a group of friends from St Thomas’ College in Colombo, Sri Lanka, now established among the Sri Lankan diaspora community overseas. Passionate to support their troubled homeland, and to give Sri Lankan children of tomorrow the opportunities they had enjoyed, the Old Boys – with other alumni, international friends and contacts – came up with the idea of a charity cycle ride from Colombo to Jaffna. The cycle ride recreates the sport, fun and bonding that marks the Old Boys’ connection, while also providing a visible means to attract support. Symbolically, by traversing the island from Colombo to the war-devastated north – it offers a journey of heart-rending beauty, healing and hope. The R4C2022 organising committee would like to thank the brand ambassadors Dan Norton, Jen Orr, Pia De Girolamo and Russel Arnold for their support. www.ride4ceylon.com
