I’m running a half-marathon this year to raise funds for Dementia UK. It’s a cruel disease that has impacted my family profoundly, not only challenging the individual affected but deeply impacting everyone around them.

Having a mixed dementia combines symptoms of Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia, leading to changes in memory, personality, and the ability to perform daily tasks. Watching someone close to you navigate these changes is heartbreaking—it’s as though parts of them fade away, even as you try to hold on to precious moments. Dementia doesn’t just steal memories; it transforms relationships and routines, changing the lives of everyone involved.

Dementia affects nearly a million people in the UK alone, with numbers increasing every year. Yet, despite its impact, dementia care and research are still underfunded. Dementia UK provides invaluable support through their Admiral Nurses, specialists who help families and individuals navigate the complexities of dementia with tailored guidance and compassionate care.

Running is my way of honouring our journey and doing something to help others facing similar struggles. By raising funds, I hope to support Dementia UK in providing more families with the support they need and in moving closer to a future where dementia doesn’t have such a devastating impact.
