Story

On 28th April last year my youngest son Finn, then aged 5, fell 14ft off a mezzanine landing in our home, and was knocked unconscious after landing on his head. The Air Ambulance with their trauma doctor and paramedic attended alongside the normal paramedics to ensure Finn was stable and able to be transferred to hospital. In a miracle, Finn did not break any bones or have any spinal injuries. He recovered from his severe concussion and got back to school for the end of his P1 year.

We realised that day the importance of an Air Ambulance service that can fly a trauma doctor immediately to the scene of a serious accident, it's not just for farm accidents or motorcycle riders - any of us could need them.

I turn 40 this year and decided to challenge myself to do push myself to do things I wouldn't otherwise. When I saw there was a 120ft abseil down the Europa Hotel in Belfast, in support of Air Ambulance NI, I was interested. When I saw it was on the anniversary of Finn's accident, I had to sign up immediately.

As you can imagine, since the accident Finn and I have both struggled with some of the related trauma and personally, the thought of going backwards off such a height is terrifying so I'm hoping my bravery will raise some much needed funds for the Air Ambulance here in Northern Ireland.

The charity Air Ambulance Northern Ireland (AANI), in partnership with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, provides the one and only Helicopter Emergency Medical Service for Northern Ireland. On average, the air ambulance is needed twice a day to help a critically ill or injured patient.

When needed, the team fly at approximately 180mph, direct to the patient. The doctor and paramedic on board, bring emergency care to the scene of the incident, delivering interventions that can be life-saving.

It is through charity fundraising events like this that allows the service to operate 365 days of the year, for everyone of us. For more information about the service, please visit www.airambulanceni.org.
