Story
I'm running the 2024 New York Marathon to raise funds and awareness for Sarcoma UK, a national charity that funds vital research, offers support for anyone affected by sarcoma cancer and campaigns for better treatments.
As a family, we were completely unaware of this devastating and brutal form of cancer. However, this quickly changed as Debbie Marr - wife to Steve Marr, mother to Rob and Nat (my amazing wife), and Grandma to my amazing kids Grace, Will and Mabel - was diagnosed with sarcoma back in August 2019 and sadly passed away shortly afterwards in June 2020. It's hard to put into words what a terrifying experience this was for everyone and particularly how quickly the sarcoma cancer took hold and what Deb had to suffer.
For those that don't know, sarcoma is a type of cancer that develops in the bone and soft tissue. It is difficult to diagnose and one of the hardest to treat. In Deb's case, it developed in her leg which everyone initially thought was just a simple sports injury but it quickly developed and spread throughout her body in such a cruel and indiscriminate way.
By supporting me, we can push for change and help to ensure more positive outcomes following diagnosis. Your donation will help researchers find answers, keep the Sarcoma UK specialist Support Line open and raise awareness to improve treatment and standards of care for people with this form of cancer. By diagnosing sarcoma early and providing the right treatment, there can be a positive outcome for all!
Your donations can have a massive impact, some examples below:
- £1 could cover the cost of 10 texts to the support line.
- £10 could be used to buy microscope slides to look at cells in minute detail.
- £30 could fund one hour of use of a high-powered laboratory microscope.
- £150 could fund the support line for a week.
As I lace up my running shoes for the New York Marathon, I will remember that every step I take in NYC is a tribute to Deb's memory and for everyone that loved her. Your donation is also a step towards progress - a world where sarcoma is better understood, better treated, and ultimately defeated!
Thank you for your support and together we can make a difference. I hope this heartfelt story resonates with you.
