Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.

Story

Charlie

Charlie worked in our purchasing / stores team at Continental Sports Ltd. A happy, diligent and valued member of the team, in late 2023 Charlie took a 3-month sabbatical to enjoy the holiday of a lifetime with his girlfriend travelling around South East Asia.

We were all looking forward to Charlie coming back to work just before Christmas 2023 and were excited to hear about his trip.

Charlie was under the weather when he left Thailand and became increasingly ill during the flight. On landing at Manchester airport he was met by an ambulance and taken to the Wythenshawe hospital.

Charlie received excellent treatment from the team at Wythenshawe but despite their best efforts he developed Sepsis. Unfortunately every treatment they could offer wasn't enough. We received the devastating news that Charlie passed away at the end of the following day.

Charlie was a fit, healthy 25 year old in the prime of life and looking forward to his future - to have him taken by Sepsis in this way is sad beyond words and devastating for his family, friends and colleagues.

Mallorca312

I am Nick Booth, Managing Director of Continental Sports Ltd. Charlie worked for Continental Sports and we all feel his loss and the shocking impact that Sepsis has had on our team.

I therefore want to raise some money to help the UK Sepsis Trust in their campaign and work to spread the word to try to ensure better diagnosis and treatment of Sepsis. I am cycling in the Mallorca312 on 27th April 2024 and would appreciate your support.

The Mallorca312 https://mallorca312.com/en/ is a bike ride around Mallorca - the perimeter of Mallorca is 312km. The annual event attracts 8,000 cyclists, of whom less that 2,000 manage to complete the full distance.

The 312km includes 5,500m of elevation up and down the (extremely) hilly north coast of Mallorca. In addition the entire distance must be completed in a maximum of 14 hours, with a hard cut-off "broom wagon" to sweep up any "stragglers" going more slowly.

The training I have been doing has been ridiculous - with many hours (so far) spent on an indoor bike trainer. It is far from certain that I will be able to complete the ride - many who enter don't manage to complete it - but I am giving it my best shot and am trying as hard as I possibly can to prepare.

If I complete it and manage to raise some money for the UK Sepsis Trust along the way then great and I will be hugely grateful for your support. If I don't manage to complete it, then I will still be hugely grateful for your support - but don't expect a refund!

About The UK Sepsis Trust

Fundraising is at the heart of our fight against sepsis.

It raises awareness, and sparks the question: “What is sepsis? In this way, fundraising can help prevent thousands of deaths & unnecessary suffering through knowledge & awareness of the symptoms.

It also funds our vital support work, Public Awareness, Educating Health Professionals & helping people adjust to life after sepsis through accessing our Support Group network. We also lobby government to support our cause and makes vital changes in areas such as the NHS.
