Story

This September, as part of a 4 man team known as Ocean Beach, I will be heading over to Keswick in the Lake District to get involved with Race The Sun Off Road Challenge.

This is a mixed terrain, bike, hike and paddle triathlon-style adventure/fundraising event for the children’s charity Action Medical Group.

The target is to complete all three disciplines consecutively, before the sun sets and raise as much money as possible for the charity.

The Mission:

Part 1 - 20 miles off-road mountain biking ascending up through enchanted Whinlatter Forest.

Part 2 - 10.5 mile hike along the 931m slopes of Skiddaw.

Part 3 - 2 mile paddle in a 4 man kayak through fast flowing, some say shark infested waters, to the finish line.

The Team:

Jason Leary - Commanding officer Leary will be guiding the assault across Keswick, specialising in military leadership, mountaineering and survival skills behind enemy lines, his role will be to keep the men coordinated and on task, whilst negotiating through hostile terrain.

Gareth Moore - As a coast to coast cycling veteran, Woody comes from a rich lineage of cycling. His main role will be to fire the team up through the rigorous Whinlatter Forest on the first leg of the mission.

Michael Couch - is the heavy artillery amongst the squad. A proficient CrossFit and Olympic lifting competitor Couchy has in his locker all the technical skills and raw strength required to clean and jerk any equipment, bikes and personnel across the finish line where needed.

For my part, I will be the teams in mission reconnaissance, safely navigating the guys and myself, from check point to check point whilst exploiting any weak links offered up in the terrain. I will also be the main point of contact for fizzy sweets and other urgent medical assistance.

Together we hope our combined strengths will enable us to rendezvous at our said landing zone, before the sun sets.

Our challenge is of course for fun, but we do have a special cause that we are fundraising for in Action Medical Group Children’s Charity, and we hope to raise as much money as possible for them to continue their incredible work.

All donations massively appreciated!
