Story
In March 2025, I'm challenging myself to run 100 miles (that's just over three miles a day) for Mermaids.
I hate running, am terrible at it, and have not run a single step for several months, but I'm doing this for one very important reason: to help ensure trans young people and their families can continue to access the emotional, informative, and peer-to-peer support they deserve.
As you may know, the political, social and cultural climate for trans and gender nonconforming people is increasingly hostile. In particular, young trans people have found themselves at the centre of a moral panic which threatens their access to safe, inclusive spaces, lifesaving healthcare, and the right to live as their happiest and most authentic self.
Mermaids' vision is a safe, inclusive society where trans young people are empowered to live their best lives. I've volunteered with Mermaids for years and can't emphasise enough how vital their work is for young trans people in the UK.
