Story
I am fundraising for Jacari because I've worked for the charity for nearly 3 years and can really see the impact of the work they do and how effective it is. I'm aiming to complete 500,000 steps in the month of May and would really appreciate your support - all donations welcome!
Jacari is a small, dynamic charity providing tutoring and fun activities to refugee, asylum-seeking and migrant children aged 6-16 who use English as an additional language and are struggling at school. We work in Bristol and Oxford, partnering with local schools to identify EAL pupils most in need of our support - those that are newly arrived in the UK, who don't speak any English and live in deprived areas of the cities.
Our tutoring is delivered by volunteers who are mostly university students, who are more than a tutor to young EAL speakers. They provide them with a trusted mentor and friend, who helps them build their confidence and aspirations to consider further education.
Our volunteer tutors visit their Jacari pupil weekly during term-time either in their school or at home. We provide volunteers with training, teaching resources and games to use in their lessons, along with regular support and check-ins.
